Kev Says... Check Your Facts, Answers:

1. TRUE. Ibis chicks are indeed very cute. When they're little, ibises are adorable little balls of white and black fluffy feathers. As they mature they'll start to develop their leathery-looking heads.

2. FALSE. Ibises are in no way related to penguins. Apart from being birds.

3. FALSE. Ibises are not descendents of Egyptian gods. However there was an Egyptian god called Thoth which had the body of a man and the head of an ibis. He was the god of wisdom, writing and knowledge (so it’s pretty clear that City Steve has no relation to him!).

4. TRUE. Ibises' long beaks are highly specialised and designed for reaching deep under the soil for worms and beetles, or catching small water dwellers in lakes and rivers.

5. FALSE. Nature has always been used as inspiration for inventors. And the first aeroplane did indeed borrow the shape of birds’ wings to get it off the ground. Ibis wings however were never the specific source of inspiration.

6. FALSE. Tuxedo suits have nothing to do with ibises. Black and white have historically been colours associated with formality and prestige for a long time in Western civilisation. City Steve might wish that bin chickens were responsible for such finery, but this is unfortunately just another one of his tall tales!

7. TRUE.

8. TRUE.

9. TRUE. The Cambodian Giant Ibis is the tallest ibis in the world, reaching a height of 100cm, which is roughly the same height as a standard wheelie bin in Australia.

10. TRUE. The Scarlet Ibis lives in tropical South America and parts of the Caribbean. Whilst it has the same body and beak shape as the Australian Ibis, its feathers are instead a beautiful reddish-pink colour, much like a flamingo!
